School Library Service

Harrow School Library Service exists to help local schools develop and maintain excellent school libraries and classroom library collections.  We assist schools in developing skilled readers for information and excited readers for life. We work with you to enhance the reading experience for your children from the Foundation Stage to the top of KS2 and transition to KS3

We support schools in providing children with the essential elements for promoting a love of reading:

  • A print rich environment
  • Access to a variety of texts - fiction and non fiction
  • Opportunity to choose what to read
  • Encouragement to read
  • Comfortable, inviting places to read
  • Reading related activities to stimulate and maintain an interest in reading

Reading for pleasure benefits are positively linked with literacy related benefits and also increase

  • General knowledge
  • A better understanding of other cultures
  • Community participation
  • A greater insight into human nature and decision making

(National Literacy Trust, 'Reading for pleasure: a research overview, 2006)

Reading for pleasure has been revealed as the most important indicator of the future success of a child (OECD, 2002).
