Additional Government funds for road maintenance
Severe winter maintenance fund
As a result of the recent harsh winters and the resulting damage to highways nationwide, the Government made extra funding available to councils across the country. In order to promote greater transparency each local authority was asked to publish a brief note on its website setting out how this extra funding was spent and how it complemented rather than replaced existing budgets. Harrow Council was allocated an additional £286,721.
The Council decided to use the additional funding in the following two ways:
- To reduce the increasing backlog of works caused by the last two winter periods.
- To carry out repairs to areas that although perhaps not considered to be an immediate hazard, had been identified by the Council's Highway Inspection team as likely to require repair at some time in the near future, especially if we have another severe winter.
As a result of the extra funding it was possible to bring these works forward and also enable repairs to be carried out to larger sections of the carriageway than previously possible. These repairs fixed both the immediate "pot holes" but also any damage to the surrounding road surface.
The Council will continue to use its limited highways budget to tackle the ongoing road maintenance problems on a priority basis.
