School support staff roles

Qualifications and experience required

When a role needs to be filled the school in question advertises the vacancy. The advert contains a job description, person specification and required qualifications.

Please note, if you don't have the right qualifications it's worth stating if you have any equivalent credentials or experience. For example a nursery role may ask for the old NNEB qualification.  In this case the equivalent BTEC in childcare or NVQ Level 3 Children's Care, Learning & Development (CCLD) is an acceptable equivalent.

Remember experience counts too. Think about what volunteering or other unpaid experience you have that is worth mentioning.

Technical jobs are likely to require proof of competence through specialist experience and qualifications.  For example a high science technician will need at least science GCSE grade C or equivalency with suitable experience.

Literacy and numeracy skills rank high. Think about what proof you have of these skills. You may want to speak with local colleges (Harrow College / Stanmore College) about gaining relevant Level 2 qualifications.  Or for help assessing your skills visit www.move-on.org.uk.

What if I don't have school experience?
You can gain useful experience by doing the following:
  • Do an introductory childcare course
  • Volunteer to help with a playgroup
  • Volunteer to help at a local school
Please remember schools and local groups may be able to help you but their focus is on working with children and young people. Think about what you can give to them.  Lots of people are looking for volunteering jobs so it often depends on what skills you offer, and when.
