Direct payments

What is a direct payment?

A direct payment is a financial benefit the council provides to pay for support for you or your child. The scheme is designed to give you greater flexibility and independence.

You can use the money to employ a personal assistant, pay for agency staff or use daytime activities facilities. Or you can 'mix and match' ie have some of your support provided by the council, and take some as a direct payment. You can discuss the details with your social worker.

Direct payments are not taxable or a social security benefit ie they will not affect any means tested benefit you are entitled to.
