Application for travel assistance to school
Background
Home to school travel grants are payments by local authorities for the cost of travel for compulsory school-age pupils travelling from home to school. It is the legal responsibility of the parents/guardians to ensure that children attend school, however local education authorities have a legal duty to provide the costs of transport in certain circumstances. In most cases, pupils will be able to travel from home to school at no cost to them or their parents, due to Transport for London's free bus and tram travel scheme:
- Pupils aged 5-10 can travel for free on London buses, trams and tube. A photocard maybe needed for certain journeys.
- Pupils aged 11-15 can travel for free on London buses and trams but require an Oyster Photocard if they want to buy child-rate Travelcards and to use 'pay as you go' on the Tube and the DLR.
- Pupils aged 16-18 can travel free on buses & trams but must have a valid 16+ Oyster photocard plus half price travel on Tube, DLR and London Overground.
You must be a resident of Harrow.
You must apply by the start of the autumn term if you want to be considered for a grant for the whole of the school year.
Applications after the start of term will be considered, but if you are awarded a grant it will only cover the period starting from the date you applied.
Awards are not backdated and applications for previous terms or years will only be considered in exceptional circumstances. The grant will normally be paid from the term when the application was made to the end of the school year.
If the child changes school, or if you no longer receive benefits, you must let the council know.
This grant is available to pupils who live in Harrow whose parents are on low income. Low Income refers to families in receipt of Income Support, Income Based Job Seekers Allowance, Child Tax Credits or are supported by Harrow Asylum Team or National Asylum Support Service. You must supply **proof of the benefits you receive.
