Sexual Violence
What is Rape?
Rape is defined as the non-consensual (without permission) penetration of the vagina, mouth or anus, by the penis.
What is Sexual Assault?
Sexual assault is the deliberate non-consensual (without permission) sexual touching of another person, intentional insertion of an object (other than the penis) into the vaginal or anus or forcing someone to watch a sexual act.
Rape or Sexual Assault is NEVER your fault. it does not matter what you were wearing, if you are married, if you are out for the evening or how much you had to drink - you are not to blame. if you have not given your consent (or were unable to give consent such as passed out, asleep or intoxicated) then this is also rape or sexual assault.
What To Do:
- Go to a safe place
- It is up to you if you want to report it to the police, however
the sooner you report the better for forensic evidence to be collected
- Contact the Havens, they can provide medical examinations, forensic evidence collection and counselling. You do not need to contact the police first, however the Havens can assist you if you want to report to the police.
The Havens:
King's College Hospital, Denmark Hill, London
St Marys Hospital, Praed Street, London
The Royal London Hospital, London
Although the Havens are linked to the hospitals listed above, they are discrete, self-contained clinics. So it will not be obvious to other people at the hospital where you are going.
