'Honour' Based Violence
'Honour' Based Violence:
So-called honour-based violence can lead to people being denied the right to exercise choice and control over their own lives. It can include honour killings, forced (and early) marriage, dowry-related incidents, female genital mutilation and domestic violence.
These are not isolated practices but are part of a social system built on ideas of honour and cultural, ethnic and religious superiority. As a result, every day around the UK women are being threatened with physical violence, rape, death, mutilation, abduction, drugging, false imprisonment, withdrawl from education and forced marriage by their own families.
Honour Based Violence is an Abuse of Human Rights and a Crime:
ACPO (Association of Chief Police Officers) estimates at least on 'honour' killing is carried out each month in the UK, although campaigners estimate the number of deaths is far higher.
ACPO lead on honour-based violence said;
"To the best of our knowledge, 12 people are murdered every year for transgressing someone else's perverted notions of honour. We do not know how many commit suicide as an alternative or an escape ... We know that around 500 men are women report to us every year their fear of being forced into marriage, or their experience of rape, assault, false imprisonment and much more, as the consequence of being in a marriage without their consent."
