Parking for people with disabilities

The Blue Badge (also known as the European Parking Badge) is a scheme for drivers and passengers who have a permanent and substantial disability.

Blue Badge holders are entitled to a range of parking concessions. For example badge holders may park on single or double yellow lines for up to three hours in England and Wales, except where there is a ban on loading or unloading. 

The Blue Badge scheme is intended for people with severe mobility problems who have difficulty using public transport. The scheme allows people to travel independently, as either a driver or passenger, by allowing them to park close to their destination.

The Blue Badge can only be used for on-street parking. They do not apply to off-street car parks, such as supermarket car parks, or privately owned roads such as those at airports. It is issued for the sole use of the disabled person.

The Blue Badge Scheme entitles holders to exemption from the London Congestion Charge.
