Crime & Disorder - Section 17
Introduction
Welcome to Section 17 of the Crime & Disorder Act 1998. Section 17 places a duty on all employees of responsible authorities, which includes the council, to take into consideration crime and disorder in everything they do.
This mainstreaming of community safety places it in the same area as Health and Safety, Equal Opportunities and Customer Care, it should be considered in all decision makings.
The official quote....
"without prejudice to any other obligation imposed upon it, it shall be the duty of each authority to exercise its various functions with due regard to the likely effect of the exercise of those functions on, and the need to do all that it reasonably can to prevent, crime and disorder in its area."
