Conservation Areas
There are twenty-eight conservation areas in Harrow, which can be viewed on a map of the borough. The map highlights each conservation area in red.
Each conservation area has special interest derived from its architectural, townscape or landscape qualities. The Council has a duty to preserve and enhance these and does so by preparing area specific guidance.
This guidance is incorporated within Conservation Area Appraisals and Management Strategies. These documents present townscape and architectural character analysis of the area in question and use this to inform policies and potential actions to ensure positive change. In this way they indicate how the Council is likely to respond to planning applications. The documents are therefore written to assist residents and developers as well as the Council's planning department.
The borough's conservation areas are split into four groups:
Please click on the above geographical grouping that you are interested in and this will take you to guidance for that specific conservation area.
Alongside these, you will find maps for each area. In addition, where Article 4 Directions control the extent of permitted development allowed this will also be highlighted, and the appropriate information attached.
Where an Article 4 Direction is applied, planning permission will be required for small scale changes, such as alterations to windows, driveways or boundaries. If your property is not covered by an Article 4 Direction, normal planning controls apply.
