Heritage Related Projects
The Conservation Team is involved with a number of heritage-related projects, which include obtaining and regulating funding to improve the historic environment of Harrow. Some of our recent projects include:
Historic Street Furniture Works
Thanks to a grant of £15,000 from English Heritage, which has been match funded by Harrow Council, there have been a number of works to Harrow's array of historic street furniture. The Grade II listed Grove Hill War Memorial was restored in spring/summer 2006. Four cast-iron signposts (along Uxbridge Road and Peterborough Road) were also restored and re-instated during 2006-2007. A detailed survey of all Harrow's historic street furniture was carried out by consultants to produce a condition report of each individual item which can be linked into maintenance schedules and given specialist attention.
Drinking Fountain Restoration in Harrow on the Hill
A historic water fountain on the High Street, Harrow on the Hill was restored in 2005 thanks to a £19,600 grant from the Heritage Lottery Fund. Harrow Hill Trust and Harrow Council made a joint bid to the Lottery to restore the listed Fountain, provide a plaque about its history and create a walking tour leaflet of the Hill with information about the Fountain and other historic sites in the area. Other funding for the works came from Harrow Council, the Harrow Heritage Trust and the Metropolitan Drinking Fountain Association. Some of that funding replaced the old lead pipes, which would not be safe for drinking water, with a special system developed by the Drinking Fountain Association specifically for these fountains.
Headstone Manor Restoration
Works were completed in 2005 on the restoration of the 14th century Grade 1 manor house, which stabilised the building and improved public access to the site. The approximate cost of these works was £1,000,000, which was being funded mainly by Harrow Council, with support from Harrow Heritage Trust and a grant from English Heritage. Heritage Economic Regeneration Scheme (HERS) for Harrow on the Hill The HERS scheme was a joint project between English Heritage and Harrow Council to make funding available for the repair of certain buildings and environmental improvements on the Hill's streets. The Conservation Team administered the scheme, which ran from 2003 to 2005.
