Historic parks and gardens
Where are the Historic parks and gardens in the borough?
The Borough has four historic parks and gardens that are protected by policies within the Unitary Development Plan and shown on the UDP online map.
These gardens are an important part of the heritage of the Borough and environment. They are:
- Grimsdyke Hotel Gardens
- Canon's Park Edgware
- Harrow Park, (formerly Flambards) Harrow on the Hill
- Bentley Priory, Harrow Weald
English Heritage maintains a list of historic parks and gardens. The register is a selective list and identifies parks and gardens of national importance, and grades them I, II* and grade II. Applications for development within the historic parks and gardens involve input from either English Heritage or the Garden History Society.
The Historic Parks and Gardens register has no statutory power, but the gardens are protected through policies made by the Council in the Unitary Development Plan and through development control procedures.
The Council has begun a local register of locally listed parks and there are currently two such parks within the Borough. These are Bernays Gardens in Stanmore and Pinner Memorial Park.
These parks are recognised by the Council to contribute to the character and local heritage of an area.
