Opening a bank account

The advantages of having a bank account

  • Payment of benefit directly into your account is more secure - you will no longer have to worry about lost cheques or postal delays
  • You will receive your benefit payment on time and not have to wait for your cheques to clear
  • You can pay your rent by standing order or direct debit
  • You can pay bills monthly by direct debit (discounts may be offered if you pay this way)
  • Pay personal cheques into your account, avoiding expensive cheque cashing agencies.
  • Helps build a credit history and gives access to other banking services.

 How does a basic bank account work?

With a basic bank account you can:

  • Have your wages or benefits paid into your account
  • Pay in cheques for free
  • Take money out a cash machines
  • Pay bills by direct debit.

How do I open a bank account?

You can pick up a form from any bank or building society and apply on the same day.  Banks will have staff to help you to complete the application form, or answer any questions.

You will need to provide proof of your identity and address. 
For example:

  • Passport or Photo Driving Licence
  • Benefit entitlement letter
  • Utility bills
  • NHS medical card
  • Tenancy Agreement or Council rent card
  • Council Tax bill
  • Letter from Inland Revenue
  • European Union member Identity card
  • Pensioners Travel Pass
  • Home Office letter
  • Residence Permit

Please note: You may be refused an account if you are an undischarged bankrupt or have a record of fraud or bad debts.
