Harrow Council

Adult and community education

This service provides courses in adult, community and family learning across the borough. Courses are delivered via a range of organisations including: Harrow and Stanmore colleges; a number of voluntary organisations and the council itself.

Learning opportunities include:
  • Over 1000 day, evening and weekend courses
  • Community-based computer courses in locations that include the Sangat Centre, the Shree Kutch Temple , the Beacon Centre and Harrow Mosque
  • Family learning courses and activities
  • An arts-based programme run at Harrow Arts Centre
  • Courses for mental health service users run through the Stepping Stones project of MIND
  • Adult and family learning courses in partnership with Stanmore College and Glebe School at Kenton Learning Centre
  • E-learning opportunities and information through the Harrow ACL website: www.learninharrow.org.uk

We also work in partnership with other providers of adult education in Harrow, including the WEA and the University of the Third Age. In this capacity we provide a comprehensive lifelong learning programme across the borough.

In 2003, the Harrow ACL service achieved Grade 2 (Good) in an Adult Learning Inspectorate inspection. Very few authorities in the country achieved this grade.

In September 2005 a monitoring review by the inspectorate showed an improvement in the quality of the provision since the inspection.

In the November 2007 OFSTED inspection the service achieved Grade 2 (Good) in all areas/themes inspected. Particular praise was given to the family and community learning provision.
