School travel initiatives and resources
This page provides information on resources and initiatives available to schools with an up to date travel plan, at no expense to the school.
WoW - Walk on Wednesday
The scheme rewards students who regularly Walk on Wednesday or Walk once a Week. It aims to maintain year round enthusiasm for walking to school.
Walk to school week
Each year schools can take part in the National Walk to School Week campaigns that occur in May. The council supplies schools with resources for the week to encourage children to walk everyday.
Walk to School Month
Schools are encouraged to take part in the International October Walk to School Month. Online resources are provided to all primary schools to take part in a themed walk.
Theatre in Education
A run of Theatre in Education shows with a sustainable transport message are available to schools during Walk to School Month.
'Why Should I Walk to School?' leaflet
This leaflet should be provided to existing parents and included in the school prospectus for new parents.
Parking information sheet
Coming soon! This leaflet will highlight locations where it is a contravention of the Highway Code for parents to park. Reasons why it is a contravention will be provided and with a statement that parking control notices will be issued to parents parking at these locations.
Travel Information Maps
Schools with an up to date school travel plan receive site specific travel information maps. The maps highlight public transport routes and walking and cycling distances. The boroughs roads and footpaths are colour graded to the nationally recognised 'Bikeability' cycle training levels to help pupils and parents plan a safe cycle route to school based on their cycle competency.
Dr Bike session
Cycle trainer's visit schools on request, they provide bike maintenance for pupil, parent and staff bikes.
Try Cycling Challenge
Pupils are challenged to cycle to school over a 4 week period, pupils who cycle most frequently and the furthest distance are rewarded with prizes.
Scooter and Cycle training
Available upon request.
School travel plan accreditation scheme
The School Travel Plan Accreditation Scheme is a program designed to reward schools on their on-going effort towards promoting sustainable transport to school and promote best practice.
The scheme awards schools in three levels; Gold, Silver and Bronze.
