Transport and Streets Frequently Asked Questions
What is the difference between an advisory cycle lane and a mandatory cycle lane and how can I tell them apart?
A mandatory cycle lane is indicated by a solid white line usually running 1.5m from the kerb. Motorists are prohibited from entering a mandatory cycle lane. A mandatory cycle lane is used to provide cyclists with dedicated road space.
An advisory cycle lane is indicated by a broken white line usually running between 1 and 1.5m from the kerb. Motorists are not prohibited from entering an advisory cycle lane and parking within an advisory cycle lane is sometimes allowed. An advisory cycle lane is used to indicate to motorists that cyclists are likely to be using the road and are often used on roads that do not have sufficient width to provide dedicated road space to the cyclists.
