2012 Olympics: Championing Harrow

Personal Best Programme

Londoners are being offered a stepping stone into work as a groundbreaking training programme linked to the 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games is rolled out across London. Harrow is one of the first boroughs to offer the programme to residents.

The Personal Best Programme is for people who are not in work or education, but would like to gain opportunities to volunteer in their community and at the same time improve their skills and chances of getting a job.

The Personal Best Project will also help to raise the profile of volunteering amongst those furthest away from the labour market, using volunteering as a recognised means of improving skills/knowledge and experience, creating routes into employment.

  • People in receipt of incapacity benefits
  • Young people NEET (16-18)
  • BAME groups
  • Over 50's
  • Homeless people
  • Ex-offenders

  • A level 1 qualification in the Preparation for Public Event Volunteering

  • A nationally recognised qualification

  • Help with looking for jobs
  • An opportunity to get involved in local sports and cultural activities
  • A chance to meet new people, make new friends and get to know your city.

What will they learn?

9 Compulsory Units for 8 weeks

  • Unit 1 Becoming a Volunteer - 10hrs
  • Unit 2 Volunteering and the Olympics - 10hrs
  • Unit 3 Emergency and Basic Fire Awareness - 10hrs
  • Unit 4 Public Safety - 10hrs
  • Unit 5 Equality and Diversity  -10hrs
  • Unit 6 Understanding Effective Customer Relations - 10hrs
  • Unit 7 Introduction to Conflict Resolution in a Public Setting - 10hrs
  • Unit 8 Developing Team and Interpersonal Skills - 10hrs
  • Unit 9 Preparing for and Reflecting on a Voluntary Placement - 30hrs

Eligibility Criteria

  • Must not have a level 2 qualification or above*
  • Must be entry level 2 or above
  • Must be a legal resident in London
  • Must be eligible to work in the UK
  • Must be aged over 16 and if over 65 must be, or planning to be,
  • actively seeking work
  • Not currently in education or training
  • Must live in the borough of Harrow
