Bin collection - latest
Wednesday 13 January 2010:
Bin crews will attempt a normal Wednesday collection where possible. A recovery plan is being drawn up for outstanding collections. We will also be collecting any side waste.
Tuesday 12 January 2010:
HARROW Council's bin crews were today (Tuesday) working on the normal day's collection round, although some side roads still remain difficult to access because of compacted snow and ice.
On Monday, the 30-strong fleet was able to pick up from just over half of its usual route addresses.
Cllr Susan Hall, portfolio holder for the environment, said: "We are working on the normal daily scheduled collections as the best way of getting rid of the backlog.
"Obviously we know people have built up extra rubbish because of the weather, so we are also picking up side waste - for example in bags next to the wheelie bins. So as a one-off, bag it up and we will pick it up. For safety and hygiene, we do of course asked that this overflow rubbish is bagged as securely as possible.
"I know uncollected bins are a frustration but we are asking householders to bear with us while we catch up on the backlog."
Harrow Council picks up rubbish from over 100,000 flats houses and traders every week. That weekly collection cycle consists of 70,000 organic brown bins; 35,000 dry recycling blue bins and 35,000 residual green bins. In addition to houses, crews collect every week from 15,000 flats and 1,500 trade and school sites.
