What does a governing body do?
- Help make strategic decisions about the future and direction of its school
- Act as a critical friend to the head teacher/staff, offering ideas and support
- Keep the school accountable
- Strengthen links between the school and the community it serves
Who can be a governor?
- Anyone over 18 who is keen to make a positive contribution.
Is a background in education required?
As a school governor, you don't necessarily need a background in education. The most important thing is that you're committed, enthusiastic and can contribute some of your time to this rewarding role. We'll provide you with all the training you need.
What are the time commitments involved?
You'll need to attend the governing body and committee meetings; on average about six or seven meetings per year. However, as circumstances vary from school to school some governing bodies meet more frequently.
Meetings usually take place in the evenings although you are encouraged to visit the school during the day as well. This could be for the purpose of supporting school activities and/or seeing for yourself the impact of plans and policies.
