High Street Fund: Edgware

The Edgware district centre is mostly located within the London Borough of Barnet. However it extends into Harrow on Edgware Road and Whitchurch Lane.

Edgware is located to the east of the borough. The town centre has shops running along Whitchurch Lane, from Montgomery Road to the junction at the High Street. These mostly include convenience shopping and services.

The area forms part of the Stanmore and Edgware Conservation Area. It has several listed buildings and other heritage assets located on the High Street and Whitchurch Lane.

There is an opportunity to improve Edgware and revitalise the Whitchurch Lane area. This will create a safer, vibrant and more colourful environment for residents and local businesses. This will be done through public realm and creative place-making improvements delivered through the High Street Fund programme.

The proposed improvements have been designed to encourage more activity in the town centre. This will be achieved by improving several road junctions and public spaces. Consequently Whitchurch Lane and its surroundings will be nicer for pedestrians and cyclists.

The changes will create an attractive identity for Whitchurch Lane. This will help build a sense of belonging and purpose among residents in the area.

Several road junctions and public spaces are proposed for improvement. These include:

  • Copenhagen crossings
  • new pavements
  • outdoor seating areas
  • trees and planting.

We have consulted with local residents to gather their views about the improvements for the Whitchurch Lane area. We also ran a series of drop-in sessions to meet with the communities and businesses who use the high streets. Their feedback has been included into the design stages of the scheme, so that changes reflect local needs.
